Scott's Corner - What is Esalen Massage?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A lot of times I'm asked, "What style of massage do you do?" While sometimes it's very hard to describe a method of touch within a limited set of "vocabulary" that we have for it, I've tried to tell people about the Esalen style of massage, to give them an idea of "what it is I do." While Esalen Massage is a trademarked technique (only those certified by the Esalen Institute may call themselves Esalen Massage Practitioners), the heart of my work lies within its themes and definitions.
Esalen Massage grew out of the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. Known as a "Growth Center" in its founding in the 1960's, the institute has been on the radical edges of thinking and teaching within the realms of transformation, human potential, and Gestalt therapies (those that deal with focusing completely in the present). While every practitioner brings his or her own gifts and approaches to this technique, there are many defining pieces of Esalen Massage:
So, an example in practice for me might be:
If I'm working on a leg at the moment, I may continue a stroke from the leg, up the side of the body, then alongside the spine and up to the shoulders, to connect the body into more of a whole. I may even hold acupressure points with one hand while performing massage strokes with my other hand, elbow, or forearm. It can be as much about the choreography of "connectedness" as the knots I may be attempting to loosen.
In the realm of Massage Therapy, you may find many definitions of this kind of work, plus many misconceptions, misspellings of Esalen, and those who claim to practice it (remember, the name is trademarked). I feel I was fortunate enough to have teachers who taught the techniques and long strokes before its trademarking. However, like so many practitioners, my style of massage has evolved as well. It encompasses my training in Reiki and energy healing, Acupressure, Shamanic Studies, Art, Nonviolence, and Creativity. This is my own expansion of the ideals of Esalen. This is what I call "A Peaceful Touch."
Deep Peace,
-Scott
Winter Bicycling Specials
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last summer, I spent much of my time absorbed in riding my bike almost everywhere I could. I visited other "bicycle friendly" cities, and even designed a course for my graduate studies around the culture of bicycling. I still keep up an ongoing blog about my bicycle experiences as well.

This winter is my first attempt at bicycling in winter! It has been an incredible learning experience. I enjoy the temperatures above zero atop my bike. Below zero - "Not so much," as we say in Minnesota.

However, in keeping with my values of encouraging others to live more sustainably, I've decided to extend a discount for winter bicyclists - ALL WINTER. From now until March 21, 2007, everyone who bikes to their appointment receives the low rate of $35 for a one-hour massage, acupressure, or reiki session.

So, if you like, try it out! I think you will be hooked once you realize that with the right gear and accessories, bicycling in winter can be a fun way to get around.

Here are some good links about winter biking. Enjoy!

Upcoming Reiki Classes in Minneapolis
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Following a great Reiki Level 1 class in Northfield, I have found a location in Minneapolis to hold future Reiki classes. A number of folks have expressed interest in learning this hands on energy-healing technique, and I'm happy to announce that I'll be teaching more classes!
I will be offering Reiki training roughly once per month at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. The location was ideal, as it is centrally located for folks in both Minneapolis and St. Paul, and there are a number of great spots for lunch and dinner in the area. It also happens to be about two blocks from my home!
Here is the schedule for the next few classes I will be teaching:
Saturday, March 24 - 9am - 3pm - Reiki Level I
Saturday, April 14 - 9am - 3pm - Reiki Level I
Saturday, May 12 - 9am - 3pm - Reiki Level II
I'll send out a more detailed announcement in the future, and will be updating my website as well. If you currently aren't on the list to receive notifications of class announcements, please email me, and I will be glad to add you!
Reiki class prices have also been reduced! I'm offering the Reiki I classes for $90 for the day, which includes a detailed manual that you can keep for Level II. Level II classes are $100.
If you would like to reserve a spot in an upcoming class (space is limited to 8 per class), please contact me by email or phone - scott@apeacefultouch.com or 612-756-2671
Clients' and Friends' Marketplace - Misgen Insurance and Creative Grrl
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Each month I plan to feature one or two local businesses that are run by clients, friends, or professionals I trust, who have set out on their own to provide services or create unique organizations. I do not receive any compensation for featuring them.

If you have a business or organization that you would like me to highlight in the future, feel free to contact me at scott@apeacefultouch.com.

Mike Misgen, now of Misgen Insurance Agency, has been my insurance agent for nearly five years now. Once with a large national insurance agency, he has now set out on his own as an independent insurance agent. Because he can draw from many different companies, he's now able to provide his clients even better savings and coverage for their home, auto, life, or business needs. Oh, and do check out his website, as you might recognize the web designer!

Corinn Sagsveen and her mom love to create! As avid crafters, they've made everything from pin cushions, to purses, to custom jewelry. They even do custom creations for others! Corinn also works as a barista at one of my favorite coffee shops in Minneapolis. If you are in the market for locally made crafts, jewelry, and custom creations, check out her website at www.creativegrrl.com.

Just for Fun - Haikus
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This Haiku comes from a client, Mark:
Haikus are easy
But sometimes they don't make sense
Refrigerator
Do you have a haiku to share? It's a simple formula - 5 syllables in line 1, 7 syllables in line 2, and 5 syllables in line 3. That's it, 3 little lines, 5-7-5. Send your haikus to me at scott@apeacefultouch.com.
